Why Ruck?
Another task app
We’re not idiots, we know the world doesn’t need another productivity app, and our goal with Ruck isn’t to make a crap load of money (it’s free). Instead, it was born from an itch we’ve had long before AI came along: wanting somewhere simple to throw our tasks and projects so we remember them tomorrow.
Even before AI, feature fatigue and complicated workflows were already a frustration for us. Watching our favourite apps gradually morph into bloated platforms was becoming an all-too-familiar story. Enterprise bucks are lovely, after all.
But with AI, something has changed, and we suspect more people are finding themselves in the same boat. Agents are becoming part of how we work, helping us plan, manage and get things done. For the first time in a long time, we think people might actually need less from their software and interfaces, not more.
We still need somewhere to see what’s going on.
Just because an agent can manage our projects doesn’t mean we should have to ask it what’s happening. We still want to see what we’re working on, understand how things are progressing and discover things we might not have thought to ask about. There’s something valuable about being able to open an app, have a look around and make sense of things for ourselves.
Less ceremony, more getting things done.
Agents give us an opportunity to strip away much of the complexity we’ve built into productivity software. Instead of designing interfaces around every possible workflow, we can focus on the essentials and let agents handle more of the administration and heavy lifting. Perhaps, for once, we can compete on how little software people need rather than how much we can squeeze into it.
A place for everyone doing the work.
We don’t see much sense in treating people and agents as two separate worlds. Ruck is a shared place where both can organise work, access the same context and contribute to projects in their own ways. Agents can take action, while people have a clear, approachable interface for staying involved and understanding what’s happening.
That’s why we built Ruck.
We’re not trying to reinvent project management or convince everyone to abandon the tools they love. We just wanted a simple home for whatever we’re working on, built for the way we work today, alongside our teams and agents.
